Frequently Asked Questions for Individual IFS Therapy
▸ How do I get started?
Reaching out is the hardest part when looking for personal support or considering making a change. Once you contact the IFS Telehealth Collective, we will schedule a 20-minute, no-fee consultation with our Client Care Coordinator, and together we’ll decide if working with one of our clinicians would be a good fit for you.

▸ Why is it important to work with a Level 1 trained IFS therapist?
Being a Level 1 trained IFS therapist is important to our collective and ensures the approach is being used effectively and safely. According to the IFS Institute, anyone who has not completed one or more levels of training by the Institute cannot effectively, and in good faith, practice IFS therapy. In addition to having a graduate degree in psychotherapy, completing official training by the IFS Institute is required of all our clinicians, and the only legitimate way to use IFS in a clinical setting.
▸ How often will we meet?
Every week. This is for your benefit. We know from experience working with clients that you need to meet frequently and consistently to get the most benefit and to help you reach your goals. This is supported by research that clients who attend counseling weekly have better treatment outcomes.
▸ How long are the sessions?
For greater results, IFS Telehealth Collective recommends 75-minutes as the standard session length. We also offer prorated sessions of varying lengths to accommodate your therapeutic needs and preferences. You can discuss this during the free consultation and with your therapist along the way.
Individual sessions typically run for 60- 75 minutes. Although shorter or longer sessions can be accommodated. Once you and your therapist decide on the session length that will work best for you, your therapist will confirm the fee for the agreed upon session length. The length of time in treatment can vary, depending on your goals, motivation, and needs.
▸ How many sessions will I need?
The length of time in therapy can vary, depending on your goals, motivation, and needs. After your assessment, we’ll determine a personal treatment plan to address your needs. Some issues are more complex than others and take longer to heal. We will help you track your progress, and when you’re ready to finish your sessions, we will celebrate with you and develop a plan to help you maintain what you’ve achieved.
▸ What are your rates?

▸ Do you take insurance?
IFS Telehealth Collective is an out-of-network provider for all insurance companies. Some insurance policies provide partial reimbursement for out-of-network providers. We can provide you with a monthly statement to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement if you wish. The IFS Telehealth Collective works with Reimbursify, which is a free service that allows us to check benefits on some insurance plans. You can also check with your insurance company directly for information about your coverage for mental health teletherapy.
When you call the number on your insurance card for behavioral or mental health and ask about out of network benefits, these are the type of questions we recommend to get all the info you need:
- What are my out of network benefits for mental health therapy?
- Do I need pre-authorization?
- What is my annual deductible?
- How much of my deductible has been met so far this year?
- What is the co-pay once the deductible is met?
- Where should I send my claims?
Insurance companies require a qualifying diagnosis and access to client records. Some clients prefer to maintain non-disclosure with their insurance companies in order to avoid diagnostic labels and codes.
▸ How do you collect payment?
Payment for your full session fee is due at the time of service. The IFS Telehealth Collective requires a credit card to be on file in our secure practice management system. We take major credit cards, debit cards, FSA, and HSA cards.
▸ What is your cancellation policy?
IFS Telehealth Collective maintains a 2 business days cancellation/rescheduling fee policy. You will be responsible for the entire session fee if you cancel or reschedule within 2 business days of the time of your scheduled appointment time.
▸ Can I be in any state or country to work with you?
Due to state licensing guidelines, we can only provide services to clients living in the United States who are physically located in California, Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, or Oregon. For example, you will need to be in California to work with your California therapist. If you travel outside of the state or you travel to another country, you won’t be able to have a session with your therapist until you return.
▸ What if I have an emergency?
In case of emergencies, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. If you are not in immediate danger but need to speak to someone urgently, please contact the 24–Hour Crisis Hotline (800) 273-TALK(8255) , (650) 579-0350 or dial 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

1. Create A Confidential Space
Things to consider:
- Is the space private?
- Can you lock the door?
- If not, will others who have access to the space respect your request for privacy and not enter the room?
- Can you/have you had a conversation with them?
- Were they receptive?
- Can others outside the room hear you talking?
- If so, can you create white noise with a fan or other form of background noise? (Preferably placed outside the doorway of the room you’re in)
- Consider using headphones or earbuds so that your provider’s voice is kept private and is only hearable by you*
If you have a hard time finding confidential space, here are some examples that others have used. These are not ideal, but should be considered secondary choices if an ideal setup is not available. If you use any of these, please make sure that the space is comfortable to you. Being comfortable is also highly important.
- Laundry Room
- Walk-In-Closet
- Basement
- Attic*
- Actual last resort: your car parked in a safe, private spot. (We want to emphasize that private does not mean secluded. Please do make sure you are in a safe location.)
2. Check Your Technology:
- A laptop or desktop computer are ideal — preferably the biggest screen size that you have available to you (that you can also have in a comfortable, confidential space)
- If you’re using a tablet or phone, please prop up the device so that it is stable and that the camera is about level with your eyes
- Whatever device you’re using, please make sure that the camera is about level with your eyes. It may require propping up your device or monitor on other items, such as books.
- Please make sure that you’re well lit and don’t have a bright light source directly behind you
3. Clear Your Internet
- Be sure to move your computer as close as you can to your WiFi router (the box that makes the WiFi.) Or better yet — plug your computer into the router with a cable!
- After that, you’ll want to close out of any programs you don’t need which use your Internet connection.
- You will receive the link for your video session via SimplePractice. If you don’t receive a link, please use the contact form on this site to send us an email.
